MAY WE HAVE THE CATEGORY PLEASE?
Is it pop or rock, gospel or country? Wherever the boundaries
blur, you'll find our screening committees drawing the line.
Finding a "proper home" for the more than 10,000 Grammy
entries the Recording Academy receives each year is, as
you might suspect, a challenging task. True, there may be
little crossover between this year's Best Metal Performance
and its Best Classical Instrumental Soloist (With Orchestra),
but not all Grammy categories are quite so distinct.
In fact, since most artists don't set out to create music with
specific categories in mind, many recordings end up blurring
the boundaries between genres like pop and rock, gospel and
country, or hard rock and metal. As such, the Grammy screening
process, in which entries are reviewed for eligibility and assigned
to specific categories, entails considerable energy and expertise.
